Product Responsibility Summit 2019: Button Cell Batteries And Other Choking Hazards

Many electronic products contain button batteries in the household setting, and these pose a serious risk if placed in the ear canal, nasal cavity, or swallowed.  When lodged within the body, they can cause severe, potentially life-threatening injury in a matter of hours. In this session, participants will learn about the spectrum of button battery injuries and mitigation strategies.  Medical evaluation and management of other types of foreign bodies of the ear canal, nasal cavity, aerodigestive tract will also be discussed in this session by Dr. Kris Jatana.

Dr. Kris Jatana

associate professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State University and Nationwide Children’s Hospital

Dr. Kris Jatana is an associate professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State University and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Dr. Jatana has been an author on more than 80 manuscripts and book chapters, and in excess of 100 presentations at scientific meetings.  Since 2012, Dr. Jatana has served a leadership role on the National Button Battery Task Force. Dr. Jatana is the Director of Pediatric Otolaryngology Quality Improvement at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and he has served in surgical subspecialty leadership role for the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program-Pediatric.  He is a recognized medical expert and consultant for consumer product safety.  Over the years, numerous national and international media outlets have interviewed Dr. Jatana, which has had an impact on consumer education.
